Every once and a while a new version of a popular product comes out that leaves me scratching my head and wondering "why?"
Jell-O Singles is a perfect example of that.
The product is made of single serve sleeves of powdered pudding that you add a half cup of cold milk to, mix for roughly 2 minutes and then let it sit for the next few minutes to let it set. And after all that you have a single serve bowl of pudding. Which begs the question, if you only want a single serving of pudding why not just grab a handy ready to go pudding cup? The serving size and calorie is about the same. Heck the cost is about the same but all you have to do is peel back the top and eat!
At first I thought maybe this would be aimed at the lactose intolerant or people who just prefer to use non-dairy milk. But the powder is made with milk and the directions advise against using soy milks because the pudding won't set.
I also thought that maybe it was for campers, hikers etc- but since you still need milk and there are non refrigerated single serve cups already out there (with no prep needed) I feel safe to say that wasn't the aim either.
The flavor is great! same chocolaty, rich flavor you expect from Jell-O pudding. It was a little lumpy but I think that was probably my fault.
All in all while the flavor was just as good as the pre-made cups or even if you made a larger batch from the box. I just don't get the point of this product. Honestly, it is easier and just as good to open one of the single serve cups then to make the the single packet.

ReplyDeleteIve actually randomly got a box of this sitting in my store cuboard..ive had it for a few months now! Maybe that should my weekend project...make some jel-o chocolate pudding!
Yeah, I'd just buy a 4 pack of snak pacs and save me the hassle of making it.

ReplyDeleteI think it's a pretty good idea for people who only want pudding every once in a while and don't want to buy a pack of snack cups just to have them expire before they can eat them all.
ReplyDeleteI love these things, and I don't care for pudding cups. The texture is completely different. The instant pudding is lighter and fluffier, and you can actually control that by how much milk you add as well. Plus, watching it go from a liquid to a solid in just a few seconds is EXTREMELY cool. And, I could just be imagining it, but it seems like the single-serving stuff makes a lot more pudding than what comes in a snack pack.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the pudding cups are both sugar free and fat free. You can use the singles with FF milk.
ReplyDeleteA lot of dieters buy the 4-serving box and spoon out the powder and mix with a little ff mild or ff yogurt and make their own concoction. I know from experience that dieters do a lot of tricky things with everyday food.
Still, it's less costly to buy the 4-serving box and creates less packaging waste to do so too.
It actually does make sense. Being on Weight Watchers, this would count as part of a dairy serving for me since milk is added. And it's portion control. The regular premade pudding cups do not count as a dairy serving. Just putting in my 2 cents!

ReplyDeleteI use powdered pudding mix in blended smoothie recipes... Using one of the singles is easier than trying to get just 1/4 of the powder that's in the box!

ReplyDeleteI just came across your site when i was searching for how much milk to add to my single serving Jello pudding. I can't stand the taste of pudding cups, they taste metallic-y to me, and the texture isn't much better IMO. Keep up the good work!

I would rather buy the boxes of instant fat free sugar free pudding mixes.
I think they are great, although I threw out the box and got here trying to find out the amount of milk also. Mix and in 5 minutes stir in some cool whip!! YUM!!

I love this product! It is much tastier and has better texture than the pudding cups. Also, I like making it on the spot with fresh milk. I am dieting, and this is an easy way to control what I'm eating - you actually have to mix it and wait, and the reward is this delicious, fresh pudding - try it!
ReplyDeleteThe pudding that comes in the cups is extremely thick.. with the singles, you can control the amount of milk you use.
ReplyDeleteYou can also choose which milk you want.. FF, LF, or whole.
I have an illness where I lose weight easily, but I don't want tons of sugar... these are great, because I can have my pudding sugar-free, but use whole milk to get the high calories.
funny, but I came across this site to find out how much milk to add. i think if they wanted this item to be slightly convenient they should have put the amount of milk to be added on the packets. Seriously? who running this huge company anyway...

ReplyDeleteWhile it may not appeal to you simply from an eating standpoint it is a wonderful tool for teaching little kids how to cook! My two year old son loves making them and since it is only two ingredients is is a simple and quick thing to make!!

ReplyDeleteI think they're much better than FF ready made. When I bought them the price of milk was $4/gal which really upped the price.
I got them free with coupons and store promo. Not sure I'd ever pay full price.
You can also make these with water if you don't have milk or powdered milk. Just use about 3/8ths of a cup instead of a half a cup or it will be too thin. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is EXTREMELY cool! As a packpacker this is a fabulous addition to my lightweight food-pack. Carrying the singles is bulky and adds unneccesary weight to my pack. I can make it separately with filtered water then combine it with rehydrated fruits or granola for a yummy dessert; there are endless combinations! It is difficult to carry chocolate in a warm environment while backpacking and this hits the spot. Thank you JELLO! Now I can have my chocolate pudding fix on the top of a mountain.

ReplyDeleteJust read someone's post saying these are discontinued? I hope not! Or is is just the low cal ones? I live in Saudi Arabia and can NOT get Jello pudding mix AT ALL. They also have their own version of some kind of chocolate "pudding" in ready to eat cups, but it is YUK! These were perfect for me to bring back in my suitcase! Much better than the whole packs since it is just me here, and I do NOT want to eat a whole huge bowl by myself! So, for me it has a GREAT point!

I was in my local super market yesterday and was checking out the pudding selection just for the heck of it and at least here in Southern California but the chocolate and vanilla versions are still on the shelf. So I hope that since it's a product you like that you will still be able to find it locally.
