Milka Marzipan-Crème Bar

Woohoo! The first marzipan review of 2010! If you have read my marizpan reviews before, then you know I am a hardcore fan. Just before the holidays, I was browsing at my local German deli/mart and I found this bar.

The Milka Marzipan-Crème bar is a semi-sweet chocolate bar with a marzipan filling. Smelling the bar, you get a faint whiff of cherry -- but mostly it is just the chocolate that comes off.

Biting into the bar, the flavor is all cherry and almond. The chocolate was a little waxy, but it did taste good. It's more on the milk side rather than the dark side. It didn't seem as sweet or as smooth as the normal Milka chocolate. The flavor of the chocolate really fell to the wayside of the marzipan.

And the marzipan was kinda weird. In terms of flavor, it was quite good -- nutty, sweet. It was the texture that got me. It was dry and flaky, and not in a good way. (The bar I got was on the older side and slightly bloomed, which might explain some things.) If it had been a little moister, it still wouldn't have been the best marzipan bar ever -- but I would have enjoyed it much more.

It's not that this bar was bad, it was just disappointing. I would like to try another bar and see if the issues I had with this one were simply due to freshness.

Milka Strawberry Yoghurt Milk Chocolate Bar

Photobucket

I love the combination of yogurt and chocolate. It makes me wonder why American companies don't use it more.

Lucky for me, the fine folks at Milka have made such a bar!

I loved the smell when I opened the wrapper. It was a big whiff of a fresh chocolate-covered strawberry (you know, the cute ones with the little tux painted on), as imagined by Febreze. Fake, but still pleasant.

This is by far the best of the Milka bars I have tried so far. I think the reason why I like it so much is that the chocolate takes a back seat to the filling. Actually, the chocolate barely even registers. It's there, it's sweet and it adds a creamy texture, but beyond that it's forgettable.

I liked the filling. The yogurt (being lazy and using the American spelling) is tangy and cuts the sweetness of the chocolate. The strawberry is completely and utterly unnatural. In fact, it reminds me of a candy version of Crunch Berries. It's a "strawberry" that is so un-strawberrylike that you almost can't help but liking it. Much like the Ritter Sport version, it also contains some hard, presumably freeze-dried strawberry bits. But there seems not to be as many of the bits in the Milka bar as in the Ritter bar.

I really liked this bar. Jim reviewed this bar a bit ago (read his review HERE). Jim didn't like the bar as much I did. But I still like him, lol!

Milka- Kuhflecken/Happy Cows

Photobucket
This is another one of those reviews that I either have to credit or blame Jim for
Jim reviews Milka products on a fairly regular basis and he always make them sound so good (in fact he reviewed this bar HERE I could not resist trying them for myself any longer.

I was able to find the Kuhflecken/Happy Cows bar at my local German deli. The bar is a milk chocolate base with splotches of white chocolate. Breaking into the bar it has a very sweet, cocoa smell to it. The texture is excellent, it's thick, creamy and slow melting. I would like to think if Stephen Colbert were a chocolate he would melt this good.

The milk chocolate portion has a strong dairy edge to it. It's not the most complex milk chocolate ever but I think it's the fact that it is so basic that makes it so good.

The white chocolate... Well it's white chocolate. it's way sweet. There may be some flavor there but it is hidden in the sugar. Fortunately, there is a relatively small amount of it as compared to the milk chocolate.

I will definitely be checking out more Milka in the future!
